If you are new to Avoca, please call the school at 423.652.9445 to arrange a time to pick up a copy of the text you will need to complete your required summer reading assignment.

Please note: Office hours will vary this summer due to renovations and staff summer schedules.

K - Second Grade Students: Choose books that will support the early literacy activities described in the linked documents.

Third Grade Students: Who was Christopher Columbus? by Bonnie Bader

Learn all about Christopher Columbus' early life at sea, which led him to seek fortune by sailing west in hopes of creating new trade routes with the Indies. Kids will read about why he called himself the "Great Admiral of the Seas" and learn of his struggles to find financial support for his voyage.

Fourth Grade Students: Who Was Sojourner Truth byYona Zeldis McDonough

Learn all about Sojourner Truth.  She was born a slave in New York in 1797 and was later sold and separated from her family.  She was an inspiration to everyone she met and was known for taking a streetcar conductor to court for mistreatment—and won!  Read her remarkable story.

Fifth Grade Students: Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool
