Carter Lawson is a sixth grader at Avoca Elementary. When he’s not doing school activities, you can find him walking his dogs, hanging out with friends, riding his dirt bike, or checking out a car show. It’s safe to say, Carter stays busy.

“Carter is not only an inspirational student for others but he also inspires his teachers as well," says Julia Mitchell, a sixth grade math teacher at Avoca.

But even more importantly, Carter has heart for helping others. Each year, Carter tries to facilitate some sort of community service project.

“Many times, we have students come to us with great idea that never gets put into place, but Carter is one of those students that takes an idea, takes a dream, takes a vision and then makes it happen," says Mitchell.

In the summer, Carter took his idea of delivering personal hygiene baskets to residents at The Cambridge House in Bristol.

“We were trying to find something no one really thought about and we noticed people in nursing homes didn’t feel important; they felt like they were forgotten and that’s why we decided to do that," says sixth grader, Carter Lawson. "That was our inspiration.”

With help from his mom, Carter filled baskets with shampoo, body wash, and deodorant and then delivered each one, but it was really the hearts of the residents that were filled because of Carter’s kindness.

“Outside of the classroom, because of his gift and love for others, he’s always open to opportunities and creating happiness for other people," says Mitchell. "So, I think in this day and age especially, it’s those people and those moments that really make a difference in the lives of others.”

Carter has also given up birthday gifts to raise help for an animal shelter.

“I got people to deliver little bags of dog food and we delivered it to an animal shelter," says Carter

“I mean, wow, what a role model for all of us, because in this day and age we’re all so busy, but to take time out of your own personal schedule to give to others, oh, it’s incredibly uplifting and such an inspiration and something that all of us can aspire to be," says Mitchell.

“Everybody should feel important. Everybody should have their own place in the world, even you don’t like somebody, you should be kind to them," says Carter. "I feel like if everybody were that way, the world would probably be a little bit better.”

Carter is already busy planning his next project. For Christmas, he hopes to go back to The Cambridge House to deliver gifts. He also hopes to take some of his friends from band to perform a concert for the residents.
